International Day of Families 2026: How Môn Community Link Supports Families – Karen and Ela’s Story

Families come in different shapes and forms, each with their own strengths, challenges, and needs. On International Families Day 2026, we celebrate the importance of community support in helping families thrive in all their diversity.

Karen’s story highlights how practical, tailored support from Môn Community Link can make a meaningful difference to everyday family life.

Karen, a single parent, was initially referred to Môn Community Link for help with hospital transport for her daughter, Ela (9), who has autism, a learning disability, and a health condition. At the time, the family was experiencing financial pressure, and Ela found changes in routine difficult, often needing additional support to feel comfortable and settled.

Through Môn Community Link, the family received a range of practical and community-based support. This included four hospital transport journeys, a lactose-free Bwyd Da Môn food referral, and Asda and fuel vouchers to help ease financial strain. Karen was also referred to the Council’s Inclusion Team for financial guidance and advice.

To further support Ela’s wellbeing and daily routine, she received a tablet (with a purple case) and access to Alexa through the Tech & Care programme, helping her stay engaged, calm, and curious in familiar ways. The family also benefited from free school clothing via the Clothes Bank and access to free summer activities, including a fun day out.

The impact has been significant. Karen now feels more supported, more confident in asking for help, and less isolated in managing the pressures of family life. Ela is happier, more engaged, and enjoys using her tablet and listening to music through Alexa. Positive summer experiences have also added to her confidence and enjoyment.

This story reflects how Môn Community Link helps strengthen families by offering practical support, reducing everyday pressures, and ensuring that families in all their different forms feel included, valued, and supported within their community.
